Geckos are some of the most unique and adaptable reptiles on the planet. Here are some of the most interesting scientific facts about them:

Extraordinary Eyes and VisionNocturnal Color Vision: Most geckos are active at night and possess eyes that are 350 times more sensitive to light than human eyes. They can actually distinguish vivid colors in dim moonlight when humans see only shades of gray.

They Lick Their Eyes: Most gecko species do not have eyelids. Instead, their eyes are protected by a transparent membrane, and they use their long tongues to lick away dust and keep them clean.

Physics-Defying AgilitySuper Adhesive Toes: Geckos can walk vertically up glass walls and upside down across ceilings. This is due to millions of microscopic, hair-like structures on their feet called setae that create an atomic-level attraction (Van der Waals forces) to surfaces.

Tail Stabilization: A gecko uses its tail like a rudder and gyroscope. If they fall backwards off a branch, they can rapidly whip their tail around mid-air to right themselves and always land on their feet.

Surprising BehaviorsThey are Vocal: Unlike almost all other lizards which are completely silent, geckos can bark, click, chirp, and squeak to defend their territory or communicate with potential mates.

Tail Autotomy: When cornered by a predator, a gecko can detach its own tail as a distraction. The discarded tail will wiggle aggressively on the ground while the gecko escapes to later regrow a new one.
